TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
The yield on the German 10-year Bund fell below 0.5%, easing from the 2018 high of 0.52% touched on March 21st as investors weighed on debt supply announcements. Germany’s bond issuance plan shall remain unchanged in the second quarter, despite pledging higher spending on military. This follows a general bond sell-off that lifted yields to multi-year highs as investors anticipate stronger tightening cycles by major central banks. Fed Chair Powell put a 50bps rate hike in the table for the next Fed meeting, few days after the US central bank raised the fed funds rate by 25 bps. At the same time, eurozone money markets continue to bet that the European Central Bank will raise the interest by 50bps until the end of the year. Inflation in the Euro Area is already running at record highs and is now likely to be more persistent on the back of higher commodity prices and a tight labor market.
