TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
Electricity prices in Germany were around €117/MWh in early January, well below €444.48/MWh hit in mid-December, due to a fall in natural gas prices, a rise in the production of renewable power, and lower demand. Renewable energy accounted for 46.9% of German power consumption in 2022, up 4.9 percentage points from 2021 mostly due to a rise in solar power generation helped by sunny weather and new solar capacity. Also, the country produced a record amount of electricity from wind on January 4th. At the same time, electricity consumption declined due to high energy prices and warmer-than-usual temperatures. On the political front, Germany announced that it will cap household prices at 40 cents per kWh for 80% of actual consumption. For industrial consumers, electricity will be limited to 13 cents per kilowatt-hour, applied for 70% of the previous year’s consumption.
