Germany has reported 23,679 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, the biggest daily increase since the outbreak began, as the government struggles to curb the rapid spread of the pandemic even as the country had been under a partial lockdown since November. That brought the total so far to about 1.24 million cases. Also, the number of deaths linked to COVID-19 crossed the 20 thousand mark, as another 440 deaths were reported over the past 24 hours, following a single-day record of 590 on Wednesday. Elsewhere in Europe, the COVID infection rate remains high, with the UK announcing 16,578 new cases as of Wednesday, and France and Italy reporting 14,595 and 12,755 infections, respectively.
