Germany posted 590 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, the biggest daily increase since the outbreak began, as the government struggles to curb the rapid spread of the pandemic even as the country had been under a partial lockdown in November. Europe’s largest economy also reported higher intensive care bed occupancy and record numbers of severe Covid-19 patients, raising concerns about the need to impose further restrictive measures in the coming weeks. The eastern state of Saxony plans to close all non-essential shops from next week. Elsewhere in Europe, the COVID death toll remains high, with the UK announcing 599 new deaths as of Tuesday, and France and Italy reporting 831 and 634 fatalities, respectively.
