TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
The GfK Consumer Climate Indicator in Germany declined to -6.8 heading into January of 2021 from a downwardly revised -1.8 in December and well below market forecasts of -2.7. It was the lowest reading since June, due to rising inflation and a surge in coronavirus cases. The income expectations sub-index decreased to 6.9 from 12.9 and the gauge for economic outlook fell to 17 from 31. In addition, consumers’ propensity to buy tumbled to 0.8 from 9.7. “High case numbers due to the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic with further restrictions, as well as significantly increased prices, are putting more and more pressure on consumer sentiment,” Rolf Buerkl, consumer expert at GfK
