Germany’s benchmark Bund yield fell to -0.38% in the third week of December, not far from a 13-week low of -0.387% touched earlier in the month as investors sought safety as the rapidly spreading omicron coronavirus variant is leading some European countries to tighten restrictions. On Sunday, the Netherlands imposed a nationwide lockdown and several European countries are weighing the possibility of more Covid restrictions being introduced ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays. Meanwhile, ECB policymaker Robert Holzmann said that the central bank was ready to adjust policy if inflation didn’t fall as expected. Last week, the ECB announced a reduction in the pace of its asset purchases over the coming quarter, citing the progress on economic recovery and towards its medium-term inflation target but pledged further stimulus avoiding any discussion about the possibility of future rate hikes.
