TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
The yield on the German 10-year Bund decreased to below 1.5%, the lowest in two weeks and moving away from an 8-1/2-year high of 1.926% hit on June 16th, as investors sought shelter in government bonds during a sell-off in stock markets amid recession fears. The latest data showed Eurozone economic growth deteriorated sharply to a 16-month low in June reflecting a stalling of demand growth. Manufacturing output contracted for the first time in two years and service sector growth cooled considerably. Adding to the war in Ukraine, investors have been grappling with more aggressive tightening of monetary policy by the Fed and other central banks to tame inflation which raised concerns about a slowdown in economic growth. ECB President Lagarde reaffirmed plans to hike rates twice this summer after the central bank announced new measures to mitigate a market rout that has reignited concerns about a new debt crisis on the bloc’s southern periphery..
