TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
The yield on the German 10-year Bund rose to above 1.10%, approaching a near 8-year high of 1.2% touched on May 9th, after preliminary data showed inflation for the Eurozone, Germany, France, Italy and Spain rose more than expected in May, strengthening expectations of faster interest rate increases by the ECB. The annual inflation rate in the Euro Area surged to a fresh record high of 8.1% in May, up from 7.4% in April and above market expectations of 7.7%. Money markets are pricing in nearly 120bps of ECB hikes by year-end, up from 110 basis points last week, after ECB policymaker Peter Kazimir said he would favour a 50 bps hike in September after 25 bps in July. Elsewhere, the EU agreed to ban Russian oil imports brought in by sea, but there’s a temporary exception for pipeline imports, to appease countries such as Hungary who opposed a full ban.
