TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
Annual inflation rate in Germany was confirmed at 4.9% in January of 2022, in line with preliminary estimates, and easing from a 1992-high of 5.3%. It was the first decline in consumer prices in seven months, and the lowest rate since last September, due to a slowdown in prices of both services (2.9 percent vs 3.1 percent) and food (5 percent vs 6 percent). Meanwhile, energy prices continued to surge (20.5% vs 18.3%), namely heating oil (51.9%), motor fuels (24.8%), natural gas (32.2%), and electricity (11.1%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.4 percent in January, slowing from a 0.5 percent in December. The CPI, harmonized to compare with other European countries, was up 5.1 percent on the year and rose 0.9 percent month-on-month.
