TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
shares booked the largest gain in seven weeks on Wednesday, with Frankfurt’s DAX 30 adding 2.2% at 15,459 and other major bourses gaining between 1.4% and 2.5%, led by travel and mining stocks. Investors awaited the outcome of the Fed’s monetary policy meeting due today, with US officials expected to signal an interest rate hike as early as March, followed by three more quarter-point increases by year-end, amid a surging inflation and a solid economic recovery. On the corporate front, Italian fashion group Tod’s 2021 sales beat market expectations, while debt recovery firm doValue said it would aim to keep the amount of loans it manages stable at €160 billion euros to the end of 2024. BioNTech shares gained after the company and Pfizer said that they had started a clinical trial to test a new version of their vaccine specifically designed to target the COVID-19 Omicron variant. Meanwhile, hygiene products group Essity posted a bigger-than-expected fall in quarterly profit.
