Consumer prices in Germany increased 1 percent year-on-year in January of 2021, the first rise in seven months and above market forecasts of 0.7 percent, preliminary estimates showed. The temporary reduction in the VAT rate aimed to revive the economy during the coronavirus crisis ended on December 31st. Higher CO2 prices and an increase in minimum wages from January also accounted for the CPI rise. On a monthly basis, inflation increased to 0.8 percent from 0.5 percent, above forecasts of 0.4 percent. The harmonized index went up 1.6 percent year-on-year and 1.4 percent month-over-month.
