TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS

Germany’s producer prices decreased by 0.7% year-on-year in October 2020, the ninth consecutive month of decline and in line with market forecasts. This was the smallest drop since February, as energy prices dropped less (-2.9% vs -3.3% in September), led by lower cost for petroleum products (-16.0%) and natural gas distribution (-5.2%), while prices of intermediate goods decreased 0.4% due mainly to news print (-11.0%) and basic chemicals (-5.9%) as well as basic iron, steel and ferro-alloys (-5.8%), paper and paperboard (-5.8%). Also, non-durable consumer goods fell 0.5%, dragged down by pork cost (-19.5%), while prices of sugar increased 14.6%. Meantime, there were increases in prices of both capital goods (0.9%) and durables consumer goods (1.4%). Excluding energy, producer prices edged up 0.1% in September, after declining 0.2% in September.
