TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
Germany’s 10-year government bond yield remained around 2.3%, slightly below an over 11-year high of 2.423% hit last week, as borrowing costs continue to rise amid inflation and recession risks, as well as increasing bond supply. Traders have been digesting remarks from several European Central Bank policymakers. Cypriot central bank chief Herodotou said on Tuesday that the central bank needed to raise interest rates several more times to tame inflation, while Ireland’s central bank governor Makhlouf added that rate hikes remained absolutely necessary, even as the Eurozone economy might be facing a recession. Earlier in the month, board members Nagel and Knot both said that quantitative tightening should start soon. Adding to woes, investors remain concerned about the sustainability of government debt in the UK after Prime Minister Truss’s plan to cut taxes created chaos in the financial markets and ended up in failure.
