TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
Germany’s benchmark Bund yield fell to below 0.3%, but was still close to its highest since 2018, as investors weighed conflicting statements on the possible withdrawal of some Russian troops from around Ukraine. While Russia said some troops were returning to bases, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned that Russia was continuing its military build-up near Ukraine’s border and President Biden stated a Russian attack was still possible. Aside from the geopolitical tensions, ECB Chief Christine Lagarde reiterated that any change in the bank’s policy will be gradual. Money markets see a 10bps rate hike at the June meeting and anticipate about 50bps in increases by year-end. On the data front, German investor sentiment rose in February, although less than forecast, on expectations that restrictions to contain Covid-19 will ease.
