Germany’s current account surplus widened sharply to EUR 21.3 billion in April 2021, from EUR 10.0 billion in the same month last year. The goods surplus rose to EUR 16.7 billion from EUR 3.7 billion a year ago, amid a recovery in global demand following the gradual re-opening of the economy. In addition, the services surplus increased to EUR 2.1 billion from EUR 1.7 billion, while the secondary income deficit shrank to EUR 3.9 billion from 4.3 billion. The primary income surplus, however, declined to EUR 6.5 billion from EUR 8.9 billion. Considering January-April, the current account surplus widened to EUR 87.8 billion from EUR 72.3 billion in the same period of 2020.
