Germany’s government posted a deficit of EUR 158.2 billion, or 4.8 percent of GDP, in 2020, amid efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 and support businesses and households hit by the pandemic, a preliminary estimate showed. It was the first gap since 2011 and the second-highest deficit since German unification, only exceeded by the record deficit of 1995. The federal government had the largest share of the funding deficit (EUR 98.3 billion), followed by the federal states (EUR 26.1 billion), social security (EUR 31.8 billion) and the municipalities (EUR 2.0 billion).
