TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
Import prices in Germany soared 24.7 percent year-on-year in November of 2021, accelerating from a 21.7 percent rise in the previous month and above market expectations of 22.3 percent. It was the largest annual increase in import prices since October 1974, as energy cost jumped 159.5 percent, mainly due to higher prices for natural gas (270.9 percent), crude oil (100.4 percent) and mineral products (90.5 percent). Also, cost for imported intermediate goods rose 23 percent boosted by fertilizers and nitrogen compounds (144 percent), raw aluminum (+64.2%), pig iron, steel and ferro-alloys (60.2 percent) and plastics in primary forms (44.7 percent). Additional upward pressure came from consumer (5.3 percent) and capital goods (3.9 percent). On a monthly basis, import prices advanced 3 percent, also beating expectations of a 1.1 percent increase.
