Retail sales in Germany jumped 4.2% mom in May of 2021, rebounding from an upwardly revised 6.8% drop in April, due to the easing of coronavirus restrictions during the month. Figures compare with market forecasts of a 5% rise. Increases were seen in sales of both food, beverages and tobacco (3.4%) and non-food (6.7%), namely textiles and clothing (72.1%), department stores (15.3%), furnishings, household appliances and building supplies (9.6%). Compared to February 2020, the month before the coronavirus crisis, retail sales were 3.9% higher.
