Germany’s retail sales surged by 3.1 percent month-over-month in August 2020, the first increase since February, following a downwardly revised 0.2 percent fall in July, and beating market expectations of a 0.5 percent gain, raising concerns about the recovery in Europe’s largest economy. Still, retail sales in July were 5.8 percent higher than in February, the month before the coronavirus outbreak. Year-on-year, retail sales rose 3.7 percent in August, following a 4.2 percent gain in the previous month.
